Yes, Regis, That's My Final Answer

Finally, a letter to the ArabNews worth answering. Especially when that answer is one proper noun:

In diplomacy, you hardly get a straight-cut answer to every inquiry. Diplomacy teaches people how to be shrewdly evasive. The American war against terrorism, now transforming into a war against Muslims, is applying high-powered diplomacy much to the detriment of all the nations in the Middle East. At first, the issue dwelt solely on weapons of mass destruction. The solution to that was the return of the weapons inspectors. Now, there is a shift in the rhetoric. Bush is now desperately trying to connect Saddam and Al-Qaeda to justify war.

Well, the question is: after Iraq, where next? Talking about justification, America can always find one if it so wishes.

Middle East Realities

Andre is trying to figure out who wrote the following, if you happen to know, please let him know. In the meantime, this is still worth reading:

I am not the least afraid to go any place, by bus or to a mall. I didn't change or stop doing anything I used to do before this mess began! People tend to forget that twice the casualties from terror get killed on the roads! More people still die from heart attack, cancer, and other things, they just don't show them on TV.

Don't misunderstand me, there is a war going on, it's not pleasant, but, let’s face it:

It's only TV and the media that make people think that the end of the world is coming. Only 60 years ago, they were leading Jews to their death like sheep to the slaughter! No Country, No Army. 55 years ago!!

Seven Arab countries declared war on the small Jewish State, only a few hours old!! We were then 650,000 Jews! Against the rest of the Arab world! No IDF [Israel Defense Force]. No mighty Air Force, just tough people with nowhere to go. Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, attacked all at once. The country the U.N. "gave us" was 65 % desert. The country started from scratch! 35 years ago!! We fought the three strongest armies in the Middle East, and wiped them out in six days. We fought against different coalitions of Arab countries, with modern armies, and masses of Soviet Russian weapons, and we still won!!!

We have today a country, an army, a strong Air Force, a Hi-Tech Economy, exporting millions. Intel, Microsoft, IBM develop their stuff here. Our doctors win world prizes for medical developments. We made the desert flourish, selling oranges and vegetables to the world.

Israel has sent its own satellite into Space!! Three satellites altogether!! We sit proudly, with the U.S., with 250 million people, with Russia, with 200 million people, with China, with 1.1 billion people, with the Europeans -- France, England, Germany, with 350 million people, the only countries in the world to shoot something into space!!

Israel is today in the world nuclear power family with the U.S., Russia, China, India, France, and England. [We don't admit it, but every one knows...] To think that only 60 years ago, we were led, shameful, with no hope, to our death!! We crawled out of the burning ashes of Europe; we won our wars here with less than nothing in our hands; we built an "empire" out of nothing.

Who is Mr. Arafat to make me Scared? To make me be terrified?

You make me laugh! Passover was celebrated; let's not forget what the story is all about.
We overcame Pharaoh,
We overcame the Greeks,
We overcame the Romans,
We overcame the Inquisition in Spain,
We overcame the Pogroms in Russia,
We overcame Hitler,
We overcame the Germans,
We overcame the Holocaust,
We overcame the armies of the seven Arab countries,
We overcame Saddam.

Take it easy, folks, we will overcome the present enemies too. No matter which part of human history you try! Think of it, for us,
The Jewish people, our situation has never been better!!! So, let's Lift our Heads High, let's Remember: any nation or culture that tried to mess around with us was destroyed - while we kept going!!!

Egypt? Anyone know where its empire disappeared?
The Greeks? Alexander of Macedonia?
The Romans? Does anyone today speak Latin?
The Third Reich? Anyone heard any news about it lately?

And look at us, the Nation from the Bible, from Slavery in Egypt, we are still here, speaking the same language!! Right here, right now.

The Arabs don't know it yet, but they will learn that there is but one God. As long as we keep our identity, we are eternal. So, sorry for not worrying, not crying, not being scared. Things are OK here. They surely can be better, but still, don't fall for the media junk, they won't tell you that there are Festivals going on, that people keep on living, that people are going out, that people are seeing friends.

Yes, our morale is low, so what? It's only because we weep for our dead while they enjoy the blood. This is the same reason why, we will win, after all.

ArabNews: Letters

"Terrorists and victims
I hope that, for the knowledge of future generations, historians will write the truth about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I hope they will record for the benefit of posterity that Israel is the only country in history that fight children throwing stones with bombs and missiles fired from F-16 fighter planes. Before Israel made it a regular practice, such an action would have been beyond human imagination and would have raised an outcry from the civilized world.
On one side, there are Israeli pilots, cruising at 15,000 feet and sipping coffee in the comfort of their most sophisticated fighter planes, releasing bombs and missiles targeting civilians. On the other side are Palestinian children throwing stones, housewives cooking meals for their families and people going about their daily business being hit by those bombs and missiles.
Who are the terrorists and who are the victims here?

Hamad S. Alomar, Riyadh, published 10 October 2002"

You, Mr. Alomar, simply can't handle the truth. Or, merely, seek to keep yourself content by sticking your head so deep in the sand that no part of your body is still visible. Who are the terrorists? You can't be serious.

Children throwing stones? Is that what you call a teenager strapped with explosives in a disco? Stones? They lace their shrapnel with rat poison to prevent the wounds from clotting. Daily business? They have bombed pizza parlors, hotel resteraunts and buses. Who are the victims? The victims are dead, Mr. Alomar, but they're not forgotten...

Here are your victims, Mr. Alomoar:

Killed July 16, 2002..."No less than three Palestinian groups took credit for the attack. It took more than an hour to remove the dead due to various ammunition that filled the bus."

Ayellet Shikon, 29, who ran Emannuel's day care center, had taken her twin 9 month-old daughters, Tiferet Sarah and Galia Esther and 2 year-old son, Ohr Chaim, to visit their grandmother, Zilpa Kashi, 65, and were returning home.

The terrorists first opened fire on the grandmother, who was holding one of the twins. Both grandmother and granddaughter died in each other's arms.

Ayellet had been holding in her lap the other twin, who was seriously injured, when the terrorists' bullets struck. As she watched in horror the blood from the woman who gave her life flow down the aisle and mix with the child's she birthed, she dialed her husband, Gal, 35, on her cell phone.

"We're being shot at. There's a pigua here!" she screamed. The Torah scholar immediately left their home and spotted three soldiers. After alerting them to the developing situation, he learned their real identities when bullets pierced his body.

The 2 year-old was injured, when bullets exited his dead sister's head.

Yesterday at noon, Yehudit Weinberg, 22, completed her final test to receive a religious teacher's certification at the Bais Yaakov seminary in Bnei Brak. She was returning home to celebrate with her husband and year-old baby when she was fired upon by the terrorists. In her eighth month of pregnancy, she was rushed to ICU and gave birth via an emergency C-section to a son, who was sent a few miles away to a neo-natal unit, where he died.

At this filing, the mother -- Yehudit bat Ilana -- is in need of prayers.

Ilana Siton, 35, was the cosmetologist for the women of Emannuel. She and her daughter, Tehilla, 14, were returning from Bnai Brak, where they traveled to register the teen in a new religious high school. They had made a day of the chore by going shopping.

She died slumped over in the blood-stained lap of her daughter.

Her body will be buried alongside her cousin, who died in the December bombing at the same spot where both lost their lives.

Yonatan Gamliel,16, had just finished his last day at yeshiva (rabbinical school) in Bnai Brak. Last night, was the beginning of his two-week summer vacation. When the first roadside bomb hit his bus, the teen immediately called his mother.

"I am OK. There was a bomb, but I'm OK," witnesses remember him saying. But as he waited in his "secure" shelter, bullets sprayed the top of the bus, killing him. He died with a cell-phone in his hand pushing "redial."

Karen Kashani, 20, a single mother, had been talking to her best friend on her cell-phone when the terrorists opened fire. The bus had automatically sealed its doors once the bombs went off. As pandemonium broke loose, some of the passengers, Karen among them, managed to force themselves out. But when the "escape hatch" finally opened, she was immediately mowed down by the terrorists.

Galila Adas, 46, was heading home to be with her 4 children, one of whom was seriously ill. The nurse, who had been up the entire night before caring for invalids, had her life ended with three bullets to her head.

These are the victims, Mr. Alomar.

Won't They Ever Learn?

Who's running the political parties in this country? And why can't any of them find a clue? The Democrats shoot themselves in the foot repeatedly, dragged down by ethical scandals (Toricelli, Clinton, etc..) or by idiotic statements (McDermott, Bonior). The Republicans, who would seem to be in a position to win control of Congress in November with the Donks in such disarray, then proceed to, well, to be blunt, piss off half the freaking voters. What is their problem? Women vote too in America, it's time the Republicans realized that. Men vote too in America, it's time the Democrats realized that.

This is insulting of the Republican party, from Time magazine, an excerpt of a short article from Karen Tumulty:

"A quiet battle is raging over the Bush Administration's plan to appoint a scantily credentialed doctor, whose writings include a book titled As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now, to head an influential Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel on women's health policy. Sources tell Time that the agency's choice for the advisory panel is Dr. W. David Hager, an obstetrician-gynecologist who also wrote, with his wife Linda, Stress and the Woman's Body, which puts "an emphasis on the restorative power of Jesus Christ in one's life" and recommends specific Scripture readings and prayers for such ailments as headaches and premenstrual syndrome. Though his resume describes Hager as a University of Kentucky professor, a university official says Hager's appointment is part time and voluntary and involves working with interns at Lexington's Central Baptist Hospital, not the university itself. In his private practice, two sources familiar with it say, Hager refuses to prescribe contraceptives to unmarried women. Hager did not return several calls for comment"

"Scripture readings and prayers for such ailments as headaches and premenstrual syndrome"? Is anyone paying attention? Is anyone in charge here? What are they thinking? Take us to war, cut our taxes, but don't appoint people who believe in Sharia to positions where their idiotic beliefs can flourish. Scripture readings to relieve PMS? What's next? Prayer for headaches?

Almost makes me want to vote Democrat.

I'm too tired...how many Americans are really this deluded?

For a better world

Yesterday, I sat down and wrote letters to each member of the United Nations Security Council, thanking them for their rejection of the newly proposed US resolution calling for military violence and invasion to topple Saddam Hussein.

Aggression by the US military at this time would be illegal; but more importantly, it would be blatantly hypocritical as the US supports the most destabilizing and roguish state in the region — Israel. The brutality of Israeli policies and doctrines of war are seen in the world as atrocities and war crimes. Israel has violated 86 UN resolutions and continues to thumb its nose at the “world community”. And the argument that Iraq has “weapons of mass destruction” is so weakened by the fact that Israel has more weapons of mass destruction than any other country in the Middle East.

So, in fairness and in implementing the rule of law, we must also send inspectors to Israel and proceed to place their nuclear activities under the International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards. No country in the Middle East is safe from peril if Israel is not completely disarmed.

Please keep “pressing for a better world”, as we Americans have no great models or leaders at this time. Our great country has been diminished in its moral responsibilities and accountability as it tries to impose its imperialist aspirations on the world.

Teri Scatchard, N. Ferrisburg, Vermont, US published 6 October 2002

Teri, I'd like you to meet Lesley. Lesley is apparently even more deluded than you are:

Dear Mr. President

I am writing to clarify your confusion on the matter of Jerusalem. Jerusalem has historically, legally and categorically always belonged to Palestine.

Your suggestion that Congress now recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is a blunderous error. Are you intentionally pouring gasoline on the Middle East crisis?

It is racist and hypocritical for your administration to call for an attack on Iraq without first addressing Israel’s terrorism against the Palestinian people. Yet, you continue to embrace Israel — reward Israel for its barbaric, subhuman criminal atrocities. That is not American!

Israel’s violations of UN Security Council resolutions far surpass Iraq’s. Israel’s crimes against humanity are equal to, if not worse than, Iraq’s. Israel already has nuclear weapons and has publicly declared its intent to use them.

The real threat to America’s freedom, safety and economy is Israel.

Stop US aid to the terrorist state of Israel. Take the 5 billion US tax dollars your administration annually sends to aid Israel’s illegal occupation and terrorism, and put it into the US education and health care systems to help the Americans who earned that money.

End Israel’s illegal occupation! No to war on Iraq. Freedom to Palestine.

Lesley Wright, American published 6 October 2002

Myrmidons. The both of you. You're Americans. You're women. If the enemies of Israel are victorious you both will be confined to your house, only to leave when accompanied by a male relative. Unable to show your face in public. With no rights. No education. No freedom whatsoever. If the regimes you support are victorious you will be stoned to death for being raped. You'll be left to burn to death in a locked building unless you're completely covered, head to toe. If your husband chooses to divorce you all he has to do is say it three times. If he chooses to beat you you will have no recourse.

The real threat to America's freedom is those who do not value it. The real threat to America's freedom is you.

John Rubinstein

Don't know the name? He starred in the musical Pippin on broadway back in 1972. He sang the hit Corner Of The Sky.

Fast forward to 2002. I'll let D.E. Bricker explain, from the CASTRECL:

"There was some brief discussion not long ago about 'Once More With Feeling,' the musical episode of Buffy last year. Tonight was the premiere of another Joss Whedon show, 'Angel.' Actor John Rubenstein has been playing a recurring role since last season, and tonight had his character given the line: "This is my little corner of the sky." For anyone for whom the reference isn't immediate, Rubenstein was in 'Pippin' and 'Corner of the Sky' one of the songs from that show.

This just makes me wonder how many references like this I miss! Clearly, Whedon and his colleagues have a knowledge of and fondness for musicals"

Once more, with feeling, indeed.

Broadway Buffy, With Feeling

Theatermania, a web site for theater fans, in their weekly CD review section, has a wonderful review of Once More, With Feeling. A sample:

Don't let Joss Whedon's self-deprecating liner notes fool you; he knows how to write a musical. And don't let the fact that his musical Once More, With Feeling -- now available from Rounder Records -- is the original cast album to an episode of a television series fool you, either. Most importantly, don't let the knowledge that it's an episode of a show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer deter you. This is a good album. Different, but good.

As In Stewart?

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for Oct. 6 is:

scrumptious \SKRUMP-shuss\ (adjective)
: delightful, excellent; especially : delicious

Example sentence:
"This cake is so scrumptious, Martha, that I simply must
have the recipe," gushed Hannah

See, even in prison Martha Stewart continues her 'scrumptious' cooking.
