Leno

Democrats love to bring up William Bennett. They think it makes up for Bill Clinton’s indiscretions. You know the difference between William Bennett and Bill Clinton. If William Bennett hits on 17, it’s not someone’s daughter.

Oh, admit it, you laughed.

Andy

When my sister was expecting her first child I sat down and wrote a little children's picture book story for him. One of my friends even illustrated it. It's, honestly, not all that great of a book. It's cute, and all, don't get me wrong, but it's not great. Sure, it was a big hit at the baby shower, and I guess he liked it. But over the years, as he got older, it was put away with every other children's picture book story. Today it sits on a shelf in Andy's room, where it will remain until I remember to move it to a shelf in Joshua's room where it will remain until I remember to put it in a box in a closet with all the other children's picture book stories.

That was 1992.

In 1999, with my wife expecting our first child, Andy, I wrote a children's picture book story for him. Since I can't draw I used public domain photographs. Today it sits on a shelf in Andy's room, where it will remain until I remember to move it to a shelf in Joshua's room where it will remain until I remember to put it in a box in a closet with all the other children's picture book stories.

It's far better than the one I wrote for my nephew. Mainly because in the years in between I've written about 10 children's books. As I mentioned, I can't draw, so they're sitting, unillustrated, on my hard drive and in filing cabinets.

Today is Andy's 4th birthday.

Joshua is now 2 and a half months old and I keep meaning to write him a story. I've tried a number of times but nothing seems quite right. Andy was named after my grandfather, who loved zebras, so I wrote a story about, naturally, zebras. Joshua is, now and forever, Ducky. Want to take a guess at how many books there are about ducks? 1934 results from Amazon. 33 of them have the word 'ducky' in them.

What could I do that hasn't already been done? I thought, long and hard, about something along the lines of 'Ducky's Heart' but, really, who wants to read a book to a child that depressing. So, time continues and I have nothing to read to Joshua yet.

It's Andy's birthday today. I think, tonight, when I put him to bed, I'll read him those two stories I wrote. And perhaps, just perhaps, if he's interested, ask him to help me write one for Joshua.

Happy birthday Andre Logan Salomon. I love you.

Curious as to what a father's love for his child looks like? Sol Ezekiel has a photograph on his blog today which truly proves that pictures aren't just worth 1000 words, some are worth all of them.
